The loss of a job, home, or sense of stability can shake the very foundation of life. These kinds of changes often come suddenly and without warning, leaving behind feelings of fear, uncertainty, or even shame. They can touch every part of a person’s identity — how we see ourselves, provide for loved ones, and find meaning in daily life. While these experiences may not always be spoken of as “grief,” they carry many of the same emotions: loss, disorientation, and the search for hope in the midst of change.
There is heartache. But there is also hope. Finding words for this kind of loss can be difficult, especially when others may not fully understand its depth. Yet acknowledging the pain and disruption it brings is a vital part of healing. With time, compassion, and support, new beginnings can emerge — not to replace what was lost, but to help rebuild a sense of purpose, connection, and peace.
Join our very own Dr. Mark Vande Braak on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 1 PM CT as he leads an online, educational grief support session to explore the unique loss associated with an unexpected, major life event.
This offering is part of “Dr. Mark’s Grief Support Series,” a program of year-round educational grief/loss support provided by Lutheran Family Service. Each session will focus on a different area of loss as presented by Dr. Mark, an expert with more than 30 years of mental healthcare experience in death and trauma. This is a FREE series with no registration fee. If you would like to join this session on the loss of a job, home, or life stability, sign up below.
