The holidays can be an unexpectedly painful time for those who are grieving. A season often filled with traditions, togetherness, and celebration can instead highlight the empty spaces left by those we have lost. Memories that once brought joy may now stir sadness, longing, or even guilt for not feeling “merry” when the world around us seems to expect it. Grief during the holidays can feel heavier, sharper, and more complicated than at other times of the year.
There is heartache. But there is also hope. Grief does not take a break for the holidays. Know that you are not alone in finding this time of year difficult. And giving yourself permission to seek support and connection as you navigate the holidays with a grieving heart can make room for comfort, authenticity, and small glimpses of peace in a difficult time.
Join our very own Dr. Mark Vande Braak on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 1 PM CT as he leads an online, educational grief support session to navigate grief during Christmas and the holiday season.
This offering is part of “Dr. Mark’s Grief Support Series,” a program of year-round educational grief/loss support provided by Lutheran Family Service. Each session will focus on a different area of loss as presented by Dr. Mark, an expert with more than 30 years of mental healthcare experience in death and trauma. This is a FREE series with no registration fee. If you would like to join this session on navigating grief through the holidays, sign up below. Please share with anyone who may find comfort in this topic.
