For all of us, a new year is accompanied by resolutions (even if that’s not what we call them). We all reflect, even if for a moment, on the year that has passed and the new year ahead. We set goals for family, work, hobbies, health, and relationships. But how frequently do we take a moment to think about our spiritual development, especially when it comes to embracing generosity?

We all have goals related to personal finances. Pay off the car, get out of credit card debt, pick up a side hustle, save more away for retirement, etc. But what about giving? The kind of generosity that showcases the essence of God’s character, embodies the active presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and provides a joyful path for us to follow in alignment with His teachings.

Unlike New Years resolutions of old, may this year let us embrace a new heart of generosity, changing how we give and live as we journey ahead.

Being A Mirror Of God

We know we should reflect the character, actions, and love of God in our own lives. As followers of Christ, we are visible representations of His teachings and values to others, actively embodying the image of God in the world around us. But what about giving? Does our giving reflect God’s nature? God is the ultimate giver. He gave us his one and only son. He gave us live, salvation, and eternal life. Does our own giving reflect that degree of love? This year, think about how your giving can be a mirror of God. That when people see your generosity, they are pointed to Jesus and see His grace and love. Church offerings, acts of kindness, acts of service, volunteering, and financial support for Christian organizations all become part of your testimony in action.

Step Out In Faith With Your Giving

Speaking personally, this is by far the scariest part of cultivating a new heart in the new year. Taking a leap of faith, so to speak. I’ve got all those same financial goals I listed above. Pay down my mortgage, save money for my children’s college, afford a vacation, build my 401(k), etc. (Not to mention the credit card bill after Christmas.) And to trust that I can achieve those goals at the same time I can increase my giving is nerve racking. Generosity builds faith. When we give generously, we’re showing our trust in God instead of relying on our material things. This act of faith deepens our connection with Him and serves as a wonderful reminder that everything we possess is ultimately His. Relying on God for finances, time, or talents may seem risky, but consider increasing your support for a mission you believe in or in weekly tithing. We read the promises over and over again: He is faithful to provide.

It’s More Than Money

Generosity goes beyond just financial donations – it’s about sharing our time, talents, and resources to uplift others. Jesus’s sacrifice for us serves as a profound reminder of selfless giving, urging us to look beyond just material possessions. Look around your church, school, and community. Consider who might need a word of encouragement, a supportive ear, or a shoulder to cry on. Reflect on the talents and skills you have that could benefit others. Often, the most meaningful gifts come from our willingness to just show up and show care. It could involve volunteering at a local charity, being a friend and mentor, or even praying for those in need. Some of those actions of generocity can seem so simple, but they can create a ripple of hope and support in your community.

You Can’t Take It With You

Ain’t that the truth. We’ve heard that phrase over and over, but it’s never bad to hear it again. All the “stuff” fades away, but our legacy and acts of kindness shine brightly for eternity. Jesus reminds us that our giving is an investment in God’s kingdom. Each gesture of love, compassion, and support plays a vital role in His mission on earth and honors His name. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to get caught up in the “stuff” that brings us momentary happiness. However, this year, choose to focus on treasures that last forever. Generosity that comes from faith and love in Christ creates a profound impact – not only for ourselves but also for others. Every act of generosity, no matter how small, plays a part in the wonderful work of God’s kingdom.

New Year, New Heart

The Bible gives us many accounts that teach us that true generosity isn’t about the amount – it’s about the heart. The Bible teaches us to give with a cheerful heart, driven by love and the desire to help our neighbor. Approaching giving with reluctance or guilt can take away the joy that God wants us to have. So in order to foster a joyful spirit in your giving, start by inviting God into your journey. Pray for instruction on where and how you can make the most impact. He will guide you toward opportunities that bring Him glory. As with every New Years resolution, it’s best to start small – like helping a neighbor, making a donation to trusted service organization like Lutheran Family Service, or giving more of your time to your local church. They say big things come in small packages, and even small gestures can have a great impact. Over time, those small gifts and acts of generosity evolve into a habit of greater generosity over time. A new heart in the new year isn’t going to happen overnight. It’s about the process. It’s about growth.

As you welcome a new year, take a moment to reflect on the immense generosity God has shown you and allow that reflection to shape your own giving. Whether it’s through acts of kindness, giving your time and talents for others, or financial contributions, your generosity can turn this year into a year of bringing God glory. Take that leap and trust in God with your acts of generosity. You’ll witness not only a transformation in the lives of those around you, but also in your own heart.
