Hundreds of Iowans gathered at the State Capitol on Saturday, June 20, for the annual Iowa March for Life, united in their commitment to uphold the God-given dignity of every human life. Among them was a strong Lutheran presence, beginning the day together in worship before bringing that message of hope to the public square.

The day began at Trinity Lutheran Church on University Avenue in Des Moines, where Lutherans from across the state gathered for a Matins service. Rev. Dr. Paul Eggers, President of the LCMS Iowa District West, encouraged attendees to remain steadfast in their calling to be faithful witnesses for life.

Following the service, attorney Martin Cannon, an LCMS member from Council Bluffs who has spent his career defending pro-life advocates, shared a legal update on abortion laws in Iowa and discussed national concerns, including the prosecution of life advocates under the federal FACE Act. The morning concluded with fellowship over lunch before participants traveled together to the Capitol.

A Visible Witness For Life

At the Iowa State Capitol, participants joined hundreds of others for the rally and march. A large contingent of Lutherans gathered in front of the Iowa Supreme Court building for a group photo at the conclusion of the march, many carrying signs that celebrated life and offered hope to families.

“It was a blessing to have so many Lutheran men and women proclaiming the value of every human life at this year’s march. Our value comes from our Creator and Savior, not whether we are wanted or planned or if we have a perfectly healthy body,” said Kim Laube, Deputy Director of Lutheran Family Service.

Speakers at the rally included Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and State Representative Devon Wood, who highlighted progress in protecting life in Iowa while reminding attendees that important work remains, particularly regarding mail-order abortion drugs entering the state.

Faith Expressed Through Service And Prayer

Throughout the day, participants were reminded that protecting life is both a public witness and a calling rooted in faith. Pastor Alex Post, Iowa District East Life Coordinator, concluded the rally in prayer, commending mothers, children, families, and leaders to God’s care and guidance.

Standing Together For Life

As a sponsoring member of the Iowa Pro Life Leaders Coalition, Lutheran Family Service was honored to participate in this year’s event alongside the LCMS Iowa District East and LCMS Iowa District West. The Lutheran pre-event was coordinated by the Life Coordinators of both LCMS districts, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting life and strengthening families across Iowa.

As the rally concluded, Laube encouraged participants as they began the march, sending them forward with joy, purpose, and confidence in God’s calling.

Looking Ahead

The Iowa March for Life served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder that caring for life extends beyond a single day. As the next legislative session approaches in January 2027, participants were encouraged to remain engaged through advocacy, compassionate service, prayer, and support for mothers, children, and families.

Lutheran Family Service remains committed to walking alongside individuals and families with Christ-centered care while affirming the value of every human life. Events like the Iowa March for Life remind us that when God’s people come together in faith and love, they bear witness to the hope found in Christ and the immeasurable worth He gives to every person.
