May has long been one of my favorite months.  Not only is it the time for “May flowers”, Mother’s day, and Memorial Day, it also takes me back to my childhood when school let out and Summer vacation began!  For me, it has always been the month that ushers in Summer fun!

However, May is also a time that reminds us of transitions; transitions in nature as May flowers spring into bloom and in other areas of life too and that can be stressful.  Along with high school and college graduations come farewells to classmates, job hunting, or college preparation.  For some, Mother’s day is the sad reminder of a lost child, an abusive parent, or that mom is now in heaven.  And the mournful sound of the bugle playing taps on Memorial Day brings back memories of those we know who gave their all to preserve the freedoms we enjoy.  Times of transition like these can be exhilarating, but they can also be frightening or fill our hearts with sorrow over what has been lost.

When change frightens you, remember that God has said, “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi 3:6) and also “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).  His love for you is constant and His forgiveness unconditional.

I like the way one of my favorite hymns puts it: “Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, Abide with me.”  In times of transition you have someone to turn to who will never leave you. You can find peace in His continual presence.  It is the Easter message that our ultimate hope is not only for this life, but for the day when the final transition takes place. The day that God calls time to an end; when the final trumpet sounds and we participate in the “resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.”
