Each of us has experienced highs and lows in life, and it can be particularly difficult to remain joyful during the lows in life. Many people seek after the unattainable goal of remaining “happy” throughout their life.

We are constantly searching for that new thing: a new house, a new job, a new relationship. Once we have what we had previously desired, then we will be happy. Unfortunately, even if we attain what we were striving for, it usually doesn’t result in true happiness and satisfaction. We are often left with that same longing for something else to make us “happy”. We are constantly looking forward to future (and often unrealistic) circumstances to place our happiness in.

What would it feel like to place circumstances aside and seek incorruptible joy? Luke 6:20-26 says, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.”

We can be comforted in knowing that true happiness can only be found through Christ and his kingdom.

There is a constant stream of messages that say we don’t have enough in life, teaching us to compare what we have to what someone else may possess. Social media can be a wonderful means of connecting with friends, but it can also open the door for comparison to dominate our thoughts. If Christ is the center of your life, that is the perfect place for your joy to be rooted as well.

John Piper said, “The bottom of our joy becomes the glory of Christ and making much of Christ.” This is from a message he gave titled, “Getting to the bottom of your joy.” It is a great resource to read or listen to on discovering the root of your joy in life.
