The new year puts us all in a mindset to make changes and make a list of resolutions. We think about how we can make our life better either physically, mentally, or spiritually. I used to really buy into this thought. I would have a list of resolutions that would make me more physically and mentally fit. And I would usually be failing or disappointed by mid-January. A couple of years ago I changed my mindset and decided I would choose a Scripture verse as my ‘theme’ for the year. I use this verse as a focal point for my mental, physical, and spiritual growth throughout the year. This shift has a served a purpose to stay rooted in God’s Word and to keep my thoughts focused on my calling as a child of God.
As church workers we often spend most of our time studying Scripture and preparing for a class, Bible study, or devotion. Personal devotion and study time are often set aside for the long ministry to-do list. So, this year instead of making a list of goals for 2025, let’s be intentional about our personal devotion and Bible study time. Let’s be intentional about being actively engaged in worship. Let’s be intentional about taking and guarding our Sabbath rest. We were given a specific Commandment to address the Sabbath as well as examples in Creation as God rested on the 7th day and in Jesus as He went off to be by himself for some rest from the crowds. Remember, Sabbath rest looks different for everyone.
Let’s make 2025 a year of focusing on Him and His Word for us. Be intentional, pray, rest, and be present in the moment. Put your phone down and listen to those around you. Experience the world God has created. Allow Him to work changes in your life and try not to rely on your own power and control. When we have our priorities set on things above… He makes all things new. (I think I just found my theme verse for 2025.)
